Michael “Mick” Patrick Mulroy
Senior Fellow, Middle East Institute and ABC News National Security Analyst
Michael “Mick” Patrick Mulroy is the former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East. He is a retired CIA Paramilitary Operations Officer in the Special Activities Center and a retired United States Marine. He is a Senior Fellow for the Middle East Institute, an ABC News National Security Analyst, a Co-founder of the Lobo Institute, the Co-president of End Child Soldiering, and on the Board of Advisors for Plato’s Academy Centre and the Aurelius Foundation.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense
Mulroy was DASD from October 20, 2017, to December 1, 2019. The DASD for the Middle East is a member of the Senior Executive Service in the Secretary of Defense's office. Mulroy was responsible for DoD policy and representing the DoD in the interagency for Bahrain, Egypt, Israel, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. His awards include the Secretary of Defense Award for Outstanding Public Service.
Central Intelligence Agency
His CIA assignments included: Chief of Department in the Special Activities Center (formerly Special Activities Division), Chief of Station of an overseas country, Chief of Expeditionary Team in a warzone country, Chief of Base in a warzone country, Deputy Chief of a Branch in Special Activities Division (SAD), a PMOO in a Branch in SAD and several other overseas and headquarters positions. His awards include the Intelligence Star, the Intelligence Commendation Medal, the Career Intelligence Medal, the National Intelligence Exceptional Achievement Medal and Afghanistan, Iraq, and Somalia service medals, among others.
U.S. Marine Corps
He served as both a commissioned and enlisted Marine. During his twenty years of service, he served as an Armored Crewman, a Judge Advocate, and an Infantry Officer. His awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and the Iraq Campaign Medal, among others. He is also a recipient of the State Department’s Superior Honor Award.
Mr. Mulroy holds a bachelor’s degree from Augusta University and a law degree from Samford University. He is married to Mary Beth Mulroy, and they have two children. A son is a graduate of the University of Montana, a former United States Reconnaissance Marine and current Airborne Ranger qualified Infantry Officer in the !01st Air Assault Division, and a daughter is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and currently a master’s degree student and the University of Chicago.

Mulroy is on the Board of Advisors of several non-profit organizations. These charities include Team America Relief, Veterans Alliance for Holistic Alternatives, and FamilUSA.
